What is a Women’s Imaging Center?

Women’s imaging encompasses several radiology procedures related to women and the diseases that are most prevalent in women. Women’s imaging centers can be considered one-stop shops for women’s imaging services. They offer diagnostic services such as breast, bone, and gynecological scans. These routine exams help detect and diagnose diseases early for women of a certain age or with a family history of disease.

In North Carolina, the projected new breast cancer cases for women in 2023 are 12,102, with 150 women projected to be from Onslow County. The key to early detection, diagnosis, and treatment is finding a facility where patients feel comfortable to ask questions, have access to advanced equipment, and the support of a skilled team.

At Onslow Imaging Center for Women, we focus on making it easier for women and their physicians by offering a wide range of imaging services under one roof. We provide essential diagnostic services in a private and comfortable environment located adjacent to the Hospital.

Exams Offered at Onslow Imaging Center for Women

Mammogram & 3D Mammography

A mammogram is an X-ray image of your breast. Doctors use a mammogram to look for early signs of breast cancer (Centersfor Disease Control and Prevention). A 3D mammography is an imaging test that combines multiple breast X-rays to create three-dimensional pictures of the breast (MayoClinic). This 3D mammogram technology is improved, accurate, and can detect and reduce false positives and invasive cancer that can be harder to see on traditional 2D mammograms.

Ultrasound

Diagnostic ultrasound, also called sonography or diagnostic medical sonography is an imaging method that uses sound waves to produce images or structures within your body (MayoClinic) An ultrasound produces live, real-time digital pictures. A pelvic ultrasound can also show the female pelvic organs like the uterus, cervix, vagina, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.

Bone Density Scan or Test

A bone density scan or test can determine if you have osteoporosis- a disorder characterized by bones that are more fragile and more likely to break (MayoClinic). Bone density tests can identify decreases in bone density, risk of broken bones or fractures, confirm the diagnosis of osteoporosis, and monitor osteoporosis treatment.

Breast Needle Biopsy

A breast needle biopsy is a procedure to remove a sample of breast tissue for testing (Mayo

Clinic). This procedure is performed when a mass or other abnormality is found in the breast on imaging. The results can show whether the area is cancerous or not.

Breast MRI (located inside the Onslow Memorial Hospital)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses radio waves and strong magnets to make a detailed picture of what is inside the breast and detect breast cancer and other abnormalities in the breast (MayoClinic). A breast MRI captures multiple imaging of your breast and creates detailed pictures. This piece of equipment is located at Onslow Memorial Hospital. Patients that require a Breast MRI will present to Onslow Memorial Hospital for procedure.
