Jacksonville, NC- October 1, 2024. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Onslow Memorial Hospital (OMH) is proud to highlight our comprehensive breast health services designed to support early detection, treatment, and ongoing care for those affected by breast cancer.

Breast cancer remains one of the leading health concerns for women, and early detection is crucial. Onslow Memorial Hospital is dedicated to empowering the community with the resources and support necessary to combat this disease.

OMH Breast Services Include:

1. State-of-the-Art Screenings: OMH offers mammograms and breast ultrasound screenings at Onslow Women’s Imaging Center. The advanced imaging technology at this facility ensures accurate results and peace of mind.

2. Breast Surgical Oncology: Breast surgical oncology is a specialized field focused on the surgical treatment of breast cancer. At Onslow Surgical Clinic, Dr. Nicki Downes is an experienced breast surgeon who is committed to providing comprehensive care tailored to each patient’s unique situation.

3. Radiation Oncology: Radiation oncology is a crucial component of breast cancer treatment, often utilized after surgery to eliminate any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of recurrence. At Onslow Radiation Oncology, Dr. Darrel Ross and his team offer advanced radiation therapy tailored to each patient's unique needs.

4. Patient Navigator: Onslow Memorial Hospital offers a patient navigator, a dedicated professional who guides individuals through the complex healthcare system, particularly during their breast cancer journey.

5. Julie’s Pink Warrior Project: The Julie’s Pink Warrior Project is in honor of Julie Zerkle, a breast cancer warrior who was passionate about supporting individuals with the same disease. The proceeds of Julie’s Pink Warrior Project will help provide screening 3D mammograms for the underinsured and the uninsured in Onslow County. Since its inception in 2018, Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation has provided over 395 mammograms. 6. Community Partnerships: In 2020, Julie’s Pink Warrior Project began partnering with the Onslow County Health Department to bring the Breast Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) back to Onslow County. The BCCCP program is a community-based partnership created to help provide uninsured or underinsured individuals who face high out-of-pocket costs due to insurance deductibles full access to breast and cervical cancer screening.

7. Miles for Mammos: The Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation hosts a 5K race, Miles for Mammos, which will take place on October 19, 2024, at the Jacksonville Commons Recreation Center in Jacksonville, NC. Proceeds for this event support Julie’s Pink Warrior Project. Dr. Nicki Downes will provide free breast screenings at this event.
