How to Stop a Nosebleed

January 02, 2025

Nosebleeds are a common occurrence, especially during the winter months, and they can affect anyone. While nosebleeds might appear alarming, they are usually manageable with simple at-home care. One of the most effective ways to prevent a nosebleed is to add moisture to the air using a humidifier. Although nosebleeds are frequent, we would like to provide you with a guide on how to stop a nosebleed safely and effectively.

Why Nosebleeds Happen

Nosebleeds can be triggered by various factors, including:

  • Dry or irritated nasal passages due to weather or indoor heating.
  • Frequent nose blowing, often during a cold or allergy season.
  • Trauma to the nose, such as a bump or excessive nose picking.
  • Underlying conditions like high blood pressure or blood-thinning medications.

Steps to Stop a Nosebleed

1. Stay Calm and Sit Upright

- Avoid leaning back, as this can cause blood to flow down your throat, leading to coughing or nausea.

2. Pinch Your Nose Properly

- Using your thumb and index finger, firmly pinch the soft part of your nose just below the bony bridge.

- Maintain this pressure for 10–15 minutes without checking if the bleeding has stopped.

3. Lean Forward

- Slightly tilt your head forward to prevent swallowing blood. Use a tissue or cloth to catch any blood from your nostrils.

4. Apply a Cold Compress

- Place a cold pack or wrapped ice on the bridge of your nose. The cold constricts blood vessels, helping to slow the bleeding.

5. Apply a topical nasal constrictor spray

- Spray or directly apply a medication like Afrin into the nasal cavity, this will cause the blood vessels to constrict.

6. Avoid Irritation

- Once the bleeding stops, refrain from blowing your nose or inserting anything into your nostrils for at least 24 hours to allow healing.
