Creating Calm in the Emergency Department: OMH Introduces Sensory Cart to Support Mental and Behavioral Health Patients

January 14, 2026

Onslow Memorial Hospital (OMH) is taking another step toward more compassionate, patient-centered care with the introduction of the Vecta Budii Sensory Cart in its Emergency Department (ED). Designed to support patients with mental and behavioral health needs, the sensory cart helps create a calmer, more therapeutic environment during what can often be a stressful, overstimulating experience.

As Emergency Departments across the country see a growing number of patients experiencing mental health challenges, OMH recognized the need for innovative tools that support both patients and care teams. The Vecta Budii Sensory Cart enhances the care experience for patients awaiting placement or receiving treatment in the ED by offering engaging activities and cognitive stimulation. The cart is thoughtfully designed for children, teens, and adults with special needs, including individuals living with dementia.

The sensory cart was funded through an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant awarded to OMH last year, with support from state representatives. This funding has allowed the hospital to expand Emergency Department resources and further its commitment to providing a safe, therapeutic care environment. In addition to the sensory cart, OMH has added adaptive furniture, including weighted bean bag chairs and rocking chairs, to better support patients who benefit from calming sensory input.

The sensory cart offers several important benefits, including helping regulate the nervous system through calming and individualized sensory experiences. By providing appropriate sensory input, the cart can reduce agitation and behavioral outbursts. Soothing sounds, gentle lighting, and calming tactile items also promote relaxation and rest—an especially valuable resource in the fast-paced Emergency Department setting.

The introduction of the Vecta Budii Sensory Cart is one more way OMH is investing in thoughtful improvements within the Emergency Department, and prioritizing safety, dignity, and compassionate care for every patient who walks through its doors.
