April is Occupational Therapy Month

April 24, 2026

April is Occupational Therapy Month, a time to recognize the incredible impact Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Occupational Therapy Assistants have in helping individuals of all ages live life to the fullest. Whether it’s a child learning to play and grow, or an adult rebuilding independence after injury or illness, occupational therapy focuses on helping people do the everyday activities that give life meaning.

What do Occupational Therapists do?

Occupational Therapists help individuals develop, recover, or maintain the skills needed for daily living. These “occupations” can include everything from getting dressed and preparing meals to returning to work, school, or hobbies. OTs take a whole-person approach. Their goal is simple but powerful: to help people participate fully in their daily lives, safely and confidently.

Helping Children Thrive Through Play

For children, occupational therapy often looks like play, but it’s purposeful play with a powerful impact. OT’s then teach parents how to continue purposeful play at home through games and creative activities.

Supporting Adults in Regaining Independence

For adults, occupational therapy plays a critical role in recovery and rehabilitation following illness or injury.

OTs help individuals regain independence after:

  • Stroke, by improving strength, coordination, and the ability to perform daily tasks
  • Loss of limb, by training patients to use adaptive techniques or prosthetics
  • Shoulder and hand injuries, by restoring movement, function, and dexterity

The ultimate goal is to help patients return to their routines, roles, and the activities they enjoy, whether that’s getting back to work, caring for family, or simply feeling confident in their daily lives.

This Occupational Therapy Month, we celebrate the dedication, compassion, and expertise of OTs and OTAs who make a meaningful difference every day.
