Seeking Health Navigator Volunteers!

Onslow Memorial, along with the Onslow Community Care Network (OCCN) is seeking Health Navigator Volunteers to assist individuals and families as they navigate health challenges, wellness opportunities and healthcare decisions. Volunteers will be asked to complete a Health Navigator certification course at Coastal Carolina Community College. Details on this certification, as well as details on how to apply can be found below.

What is a Health Navigator?

Health navigators build effective working relationships with their patients, helping to support, educate and assist patients to navigate the complex health care system. To navigate this system, health navigators need to work effectively with both patients and multidisciplinary care providers and community partners. They need to be able to identify their patient’s physical, emotional, and cultural needs and help them access appropriate resources to meet these needs.

How do I volunteer? 

Interested volunteers will need to download and complete the Health Navigator Volunteer application

Completed applications should be scanned and emailed to You may also return completed applications in person to Jessica Collins-Hansley, at her office on the hospital’s campus, or to the hospital’s Human Resource department. 

Volunteers who meet the required selection criteria will then need to complete the OCCN Health Navigator Certification course.

About the Onslow Community Care Network (OCCN) Health Navigator Certification

In partnership with Coastal Carolina Community College, this course provides a high-level overview of the current healthcare landscape and the value of health navigators in engaging community members in their healthcare to improve the overall health and wellness of Onslow County citizens. Participants will learn the skills required to volunteer as a Health Navigator in the OCCN to include building trustworthy relationships, goal setting and monitoring, health activation and serving as a social support for improving health. Those who satisfactorily complete this course will receive a Health Navigator Certification for the Onslow Community Care Network. A completed Onslow Memorial Hospital volunteer application, health screening and background check are required to begin this course.
