Onslow Memorial Hospital listed in elite group of 100 SafeCare Hospitals®

JACKSONVILLE -- Only two North Carolina hospitals in the category of 100-400 beds have been listed in the elite 2014-2015 100 SafeCare Hospitals®: Morehead Memorial (in Eden, North Carolina, near the Virginia border) and Onslow Memorial Hospital.

“This is excellent news for our community,” said Jo Malfitano, Director of Performance Improvement & Accreditation for the hospital. “It takes every single person to align with the commitment to a safe environment for our patients, and we must always be vigilant.”

The SafeCare Group® was founded in 2010 “to help hospitals excel in areas of Patient Safety, Quality, and Efficiency.” The first 100 SafeCare Hospitals listing was published in 2013 to recognize hospitals that excelled in evidence-based areas required under section 3025 of the Affordable Care Act.

The Group looks at three main evidence-based metrics of The Affordable Care Act to determine safety:

Processes of Care, with performance based on four areas that reflect hospital quality;

Outcomes of Care, with performance based on a Patient Safety Indicator 90 composite score, Central-line associated bloodstream infection, and Catheter associated urinary tract infection;

Efficacy of Care, with performance based on Risk-standardized 30-Day Readmissions for Heart Attack, Heart Failure, and Pneumonia.

“These important metrics validate the ongoing work our staff does to improve patient outcomes,” Malfitano said. “Every patient deserves the safest of care, and that’s what we are always striving to provide.”

For over 400 beds, four North Carolina hospitals made the list: Carolinas Medical Center, Duke University Hospital, Moses H. Cone Memorial and Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center.
