Food Services
In the Food and Nutrition Services Department at Onslow Memorial, our goal is to satisfactorily provide appetizing and nutritious meals to meet the needs of patients, employees and visitors. Serving the whole spectrum of patients from newborn to geriatric, we serve approximately 110,000 patient meals each year and an additional 225,000 meals per year to staff, visitors and others.
Our department offers 40 different diets to patients admitted for hospital stay. Twenty-one of those diets allow each patient to select their own options from the daily menu, within the limits of his or her diet restrictions. A registered dietitian is on staff and available seven days a week for any patients who have questions about their diets or have other nutritional needs.
In addition to serving healthy meals that meet the requirements of every patient, Onslow's Food and Nutrition Services Department offers several special programs. For instance, we provide one guest tray, free of charge, at each meal for every pediatric patient.
The Food and Nutrition Services Department, in cooperation with the hospital's Education Department, will soon unveil a new Outpatient Nutrition Program. This program will offer nutrition counseling on a wide range of topics, including Diabetes, Weight Management and Heart Healthy Meals.
Our department recommends the use of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Food Guide Pyramid, which offers a helpful guide to healthy eating.
