Expert Tip of the Week: Be aware of hidden calories

Read the packaging labels and pay close attention, otherwise consumption of hidden calories can undermine healthy food and beverage choices, experts say.
Beverages are a significant and little recognized source of calories, according to information provided by Mary Ann Turlington, a registered dietitian at the Onslow County Health Department. Many who are trying to lose weight make the mistake of thinking they are doing everything right but are still not losing weight because they ignore the calories they drink.
A Starbucks Frappuccino is the equivalent of the amount of calories in three cheeseburgers and a small mocha latte from Dunkin Donuts is the same amount of calories as a small order of french fries, according to one of the articles provided by Turlington.
